“Misssing Part“ 2010-07-03
By stand body
I have received my new tv (LG55LD650) yesterday to find out the part (“stand body”) for assembling the stand to the screen is missing. I contacted LG customer service to learn it will take 7 to 10 business days to ship the part.
I was aware of the risk involved in buying a large item without seeing it first hand but the price was competitive. It is not Amazon’s fault. Rather, it is LG factory’s lax inspection and quality control system. I will think twice before I buy a high value LG item online. Something to think about if you wish to avoid a run around.
“Non-Techie, Love this TV“ 2010-06-29

So first off, I’m not very Tech savvy anymore. I was very current and on top of the tech world around the Windows 98 era. Anyway, I didn’t know anything about many of the new features or specs when I started shopping for a new TV. Over about a month, I looked at about 1000 spec sheets and started at least seeing what the price tag:spec sheet correlations were. I have another LG, a 32″ that I got for a very decent price and was very pleased with the quality and the LG’s seem to be a little cheaper than the Samsungs and Sonys with similar specs. Long story short, I pulled the trigger on this guy mainly because I was tired of shopping and comparing and Amazon had it on sale. That being said, I am extremely happy with it so far. I’ve had it for about a month now and have no regret. The picture was the most important thing for me since I don’t know much about anything else and it is fantastic in HD. I’m on DirectTV and the HD channels are amazing on this thing. Beware though that many of the non-HD channels look like crap. I don’t think that is specific for this TV though and is a fact for most big screens. So if you don’t have alot of HD programming, I would reconsider a 55″ HDTV. All the HD stuff looks great though and Blu-Ray will blow your socks off. We watch it in a fairly dim room, but even with alot of lights on there is little to no glare on the screen, which I really like. Now as to the other stuff, the 240 Hz “Tru Motion” feature is really cool for live sports but makes movies and TV shows look jittery. Hard to explain, but it just doesn’t look right. Easy to turn off and on though so no big deal to me. I just turn it on for sports. The sound is good in my opinion, but I am considering adding a speaker bar for some bass, mainly for movies. The set puts out good sound and gets really loud (we watch at 30-40 out of 100 most of the time) but doesn’t have a lot of bass. Again, I think that is true for most of the flat panels. I don’t use the connectivity on the TV because I use my Blu-Ray player for that, but it’s an LG as well and looks to have all the same features as the TV. Netflix is a poor investment because the streaming content is not HD and doesn’t look very good. Vudu looks great though and is easy to use.
All in all, I am extremely pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone who has alot of HD programming.

Nice big clear screen with good connectivity options. A really good deal for the price. I used this to replace my smaller and more expensive Sony, and I am happy with the change.

The LG 55LD650 at the time of my purchase was also kind of a gamble as there had been ~3 reviews I could find on the internet at the time, but I must say I’ve been thoroughly impressed.
The picture quality is spectacular. I’ve been watching tons and tons of movies and HD programming using my WDTV and DVR for about a month now and there hasn’t been a single time where I’ve not been wow-ed. The TruMotion actually works, but it’s nice that you can reduce it or turn it off if you’re getting annoyed (some shows it just bothers me on).
Inputs – has more than I need or foresee needing anytime soon.
Netcast (or whatever it’s called) works well with Netflix which is honestly all I’ve used it for. You have to setup the instant queue on your computer or phone, which I suppose could be annoying, but I have my computer in the living room and the queue updates nearly instantaneously.
Cannot honestly comment on glare as I have it backed up to a window to avoid that problem. I have viewed it at angles where glare could be an issue but I just increased the brightness (or the LG did it automatically in that instance) and it wasn’t so bothersome.
Off Viewing Angle – not a single problem, I sit on a bean bag in front of it (~45 degrees below), standing up above it (~30 degrees up) and very far to the side of it (up to ~75 deg at times) and it’s surprisingly unchanging at all of them. Once you start getting wider than 75 degree’s I’d suggest just moving though as it’s hard to see the whole TV (which is fantastically GIANT by the way).
The construction was very quick out of the box (taking roughly 15 minutes in total). I think it was 2 pieces (maybe 3) – all very intuitive or you could just read the directions.
All in all I watched the Stanly Cup, many matches of the FIFA World Cup, and a few matches of Wimbledon and I’ve gotten the chills.
“Truly Amazing TV“ 2010-06-18
By T. J. Schultz (Rochester, MN)
There is so much to like about this TV from LG.
We switched from an old 26″ tube TV to this 55″ LCD. My wife’s comment after the first couple of movies we watched (DVD & Blu-Ray) was something like, “This is going to take some getting used to. I wasn’t prepared for all the detail that we never saw in our old TV.”
Here are some bullet points about the LG -
PLUS:
+ The matte finish of the screen means that lights that used to reflect on our old tube TV are no longer an issue.
+ The sheer size of the screen allows the eye to discern the detail the TV is capable of displaying.
+ The VGA connector allow us to hook up a laptop and keep in touch with the outside world when weather sirens send us to the basement.
+ The optical connector allows us to send digital sound from the TV (such as when we’re streaming Netflix) to our audio system.
NEUTRAL:
+/- It would be nice to have audio inputs for the VGA input so I could direct sound to the audio system.
+/- While the built-in ethernet port is great for streaming video from sites like Netflix and Vudu, using the remote’s number keypad for text entry to search for videos on YouTube is cumbersome. You probably won’t do much “browsing” from the TV.
+/- I didn’t think I’d be interested in Picture-in-Picture (PIP), but while we were stuck in our basement with the weather sirens going off, it would have been nice to be able to have keep an eye on weather radar while watching a video. Again, except for thise rare circumstance, the lack of PIP isn’t an issue to me.
NEGATIVE:
- We’ve been using this TV for a month now and I can’t say there are any real detractors.
One of my biggest fears about this purchase was buying a big-ticket, fragile item online. Doing a Google search regarding the delivery service Amazon uses for items like this did nothing to assauge my concerns. However, the delivery was flawless and curteous. I think the region of the country (the prevailing personal attitudes) will be an indicator of your delivery experience (I’m from Minnesota Nice).
Regarding sound quality, I used the TV for a couple of weeks without sending audio using the TV’s streaming media abilities to my audio system, and I would say the quality was adequate. I would guess that the vast majority of people purchasing a TV like this have a complete home theater system, like I do, and probably never turn the volume up on the TV. The sound is adequate, however, if you need to use the TV’s speakers.
I have recommended this TV to friends. I am impressed.
