Overall Good. Some Quarks.“ 2010-07-31
By James Ward (Denver, CO USA)
Good: Overall this is a good TV. I’m not an expert on black levels, etc. But once we figured out how to overcome the “Soap Opera Effect” (hint: turn off auto motion plus in the picture options) then sitcoms and movies looked great! We also bought a Samsung Soundbar (HW-C450) and now the sound is also great.

Bad: We just have a regular antenna and the built-in converter is very bad. Often it says it has no signal when we get signal on the same antenna via a very cheap converter box.

Bad: We don’t use the apps much since there isn’t much there yet. The Yahoo! Widget is nice because it provides access to the Amazon digital download service but it is strange that it’s a widget and not an app. Seems like Amazon should be an app.

Exceptional TV“ 2010-07-15
By Ryan Wang
Great TV. Couldn’t ask for anything more. My eyes were in love the first time I watched anything on it.

The only cons I can think of is that it gets really hot. Even hotter to the touch on a warmer day. I think a lot of plasmas are like this though.

And when building the set, all the screw holes were done really poorly. The threads don’t take the screw in correctly so you will be stripping them even more. Takes some muscle to get them in and it still goes in crooked. I have looked past this because I don’t have to deal with it which lets me enjoy my TV all the more.

Misssing Part“ 2010-07-03
By stand body
I have received my new tv (LG55LD650) yesterday to find out the part (“stand body”) for assembling the stand to the screen is missing. I contacted LG customer service to learn it will take 7 to 10 business days to ship the part.

I was aware of the risk involved in buying a large item without seeing it first hand but the price was competitive. It is not Amazon’s fault. Rather, it is LG factory’s lax inspection and quality control system. I will think twice before I buy a high value LG item online. Something to think about if you wish to avoid a run around.

Non-Techie, Love this TV“ 2010-06-29
By TMac
So first off, I’m not very Tech savvy anymore. I was very current and on top of the tech world around the Windows 98 era. Anyway, I didn’t know anything about many of the new features or specs when I started shopping for a new TV. Over about a month, I looked at about 1000 spec sheets and started at least seeing what the price tag:spec sheet correlations were. I have another LG, a 32″ that I got for a very decent price and was very pleased with the quality and the LG’s seem to be a little cheaper than the Samsungs and Sonys with similar specs. Long story short, I pulled the trigger on this guy mainly because I was tired of shopping and comparing and Amazon had it on sale. That being said, I am extremely happy with it so far. I’ve had it for about a month now and have no regret. The picture was the most important thing for me since I don’t know much about anything else and it is fantastic in HD. I’m on DirectTV and the HD channels are amazing on this thing. Beware though that many of the non-HD channels look like crap. I don’t think that is specific for this TV though and is a fact for most big screens. So if you don’t have alot of HD programming, I would reconsider a 55″ HDTV. All the HD stuff looks great though and Blu-Ray will blow your socks off. We watch it in a fairly dim room, but even with alot of lights on there is little to no glare on the screen, which I really like. Now as to the other stuff, the 240 Hz “Tru Motion” feature is really cool for live sports but makes movies and TV shows look jittery. Hard to explain, but it just doesn’t look right. Easy to turn off and on though so no big deal to me. I just turn it on for sports. The sound is good in my opinion, but I am considering adding a speaker bar for some bass, mainly for movies. The set puts out good sound and gets really loud (we watch at 30-40 out of 100 most of the time) but doesn’t have a lot of bass. Again, I think that is true for most of the flat panels. I don’t use the connectivity on the TV because I use my Blu-Ray player for that, but it’s an LG as well and looks to have all the same features as the TV. Netflix is a poor investment because the streaming content is not HD and doesn’t look very good. Vudu looks great though and is easy to use.

All in all, I am extremely pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone who has alot of HD programming.

Great deal for the price“ 2010-06-24

Nice big clear screen with good connectivity options. A really good deal for the price. I used this to replace my smaller and more expensive Sony, and I am happy with the change.

I got the chills“ 2010-06-23
By D. Stockwell
The LG 55LD650 at the time of my purchase was also kind of a gamble as there had been ~3 reviews I could find on the internet at the time, but I must say I’ve been thoroughly impressed.

The picture quality is spectacular. I’ve been watching tons and tons of movies and HD programming using my WDTV and DVR for about a month now and there hasn’t been a single time where I’ve not been wow-ed. The TruMotion actually works, but it’s nice that you can reduce it or turn it off if you’re getting annoyed (some shows it just bothers me on).

Inputs – has more than I need or foresee needing anytime soon.

Netcast (or whatever it’s called) works well with Netflix which is honestly all I’ve used it for. You have to setup the instant queue on your computer or phone, which I suppose could be annoying, but I have my computer in the living room and the queue updates nearly instantaneously.

Cannot honestly comment on glare as I have it backed up to a window to avoid that problem. I have viewed it at angles where glare could be an issue but I just increased the brightness (or the LG did it automatically in that instance) and it wasn’t so bothersome.

Off Viewing Angle – not a single problem, I sit on a bean bag in front of it (~45 degrees below), standing up above it (~30 degrees up) and very far to the side of it (up to ~75 deg at times) and it’s surprisingly unchanging at all of them. Once you start getting wider than 75 degree’s I’d suggest just moving though as it’s hard to see the whole TV (which is fantastically GIANT by the way).

The construction was very quick out of the box (taking roughly 15 minutes in total). I think it was 2 pieces (maybe 3) – all very intuitive or you could just read the directions.

All in all I watched the Stanly Cup, many matches of the FIFA World Cup, and a few matches of Wimbledon and I’ve gotten the chills.

Truly Amazing TV“ 2010-06-18
By T. J. Schultz (Rochester, MN)
There is so much to like about this TV from LG.

We switched from an old 26″ tube TV to this 55″ LCD. My wife’s comment after the first couple of movies we watched (DVD & Blu-Ray) was something like, “This is going to take some getting used to. I wasn’t prepared for all the detail that we never saw in our old TV.”

Here are some bullet points about the LG -

PLUS:

+ The matte finish of the screen means that lights that used to reflect on our old tube TV are no longer an issue.

+ The sheer size of the screen allows the eye to discern the detail the TV is capable of displaying.

+ The VGA connector allow us to hook up a laptop and keep in touch with the outside world when weather sirens send us to the basement.

+ The optical connector allows us to send digital sound from the TV (such as when we’re streaming Netflix) to our audio system.

NEUTRAL:

+/- It would be nice to have audio inputs for the VGA input so I could direct sound to the audio system.

+/- While the built-in ethernet port is great for streaming video from sites like Netflix and Vudu, using the remote’s number keypad for text entry to search for videos on YouTube is cumbersome. You probably won’t do much “browsing” from the TV.

+/- I didn’t think I’d be interested in Picture-in-Picture (PIP), but while we were stuck in our basement with the weather sirens going off, it would have been nice to be able to have keep an eye on weather radar while watching a video. Again, except for thise rare circumstance, the lack of PIP isn’t an issue to me.

NEGATIVE:

- We’ve been using this TV for a month now and I can’t say there are any real detractors.

One of my biggest fears about this purchase was buying a big-ticket, fragile item online. Doing a Google search regarding the delivery service Amazon uses for items like this did nothing to assauge my concerns. However, the delivery was flawless and curteous. I think the region of the country (the prevailing personal attitudes) will be an indicator of your delivery experience (I’m from Minnesota Nice).

Regarding sound quality, I used the TV for a couple of weeks without sending audio using the TV’s streaming media abilities to my audio system, and I would say the quality was adequate. I would guess that the vast majority of people purchasing a TV like this have a complete home theater system, like I do, and probably never turn the volume up on the TV. The sound is adequate, however, if you need to use the TV’s speakers.

I have recommended this TV to friends. I am impressed.

First HDTV“ 2010-07-19
By Q. Thornton (Jamaica, NY)
This is my first HDTV so I really can’t compare it to other TV’s. I just purchased this product about two weeks ago and I love it. I did lots of research for the size and if I wanted to go for a 120HZ instead of 60 HZ refresh rate. All the 120HZ were at a bigger size and I had a budget. I went with this one.

Now I mostly use this HDTV for video gaming. I have an Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. The Xbox 360 came with a HD Component plug but the PS3 didn’t so I purchased a HDMI plug thinking it was a HD Component plug. Oh well. It worked fine with the tv. The TV has one HD component plug, a couple of USB ports, and one HDMI. My lack of research was in this area as I didn’t think I needed more than one HDMI port. The HD cable box I had to get used an HDMI port therefore I would have to unplug/replug the PS3’s HDMI whenever I want to play. Not too much of a hassle! lol.

So out the box, I had a little trouble screwing the stand into the bottom of the HDTV. Perhaps it was my screwdriver, but it still took me more than an hour to screw the darn thing into it and it’s not even that tight cause it wiggles around a little bit. They should have made the holes a little bigger I think.

Setting up the HDTV to work with the many components was as smooth as butter. At the time I didn’t have my cable box and only had my gaming systems so the option for the Air and Cable channels didn’t work for me. To switch between components, all you do is press the source button on the remote and go to TV, Component, HDMI, and Media (for USB). My cable box was on HDMI and my Xbox 360 was on Component.

The graphics look amazing. Again this is my first HDTV so I can’t compare to others. I found that I could change the view size to that of widescreen or fullscreen (4:3 or 16:9 ratios). There were more options than that which is great! Also, there were cable channels in HD so that was even better! Game Mode isn’t really a big deal. It comes on automatically when I play my games. It makes the screen a little darker at least that’s all I can notice. And I turn it off when watching cable.

I guess the only thing I can point out about the graphics is that when watching a movie in standard IT REALLY SHOWS its choppyness in the background especially with older movies. Not sure if there’s an option to fix this. I could probably mess around with it.

The sound of the HDTV is decent, and I guess because of the size and where you use the TV. I have a small room so it’s prefect but if you’re using it in let’s say a master bedroom and you are playing a big action movie or so, you have to turn it up more than 70/100 to hear it well. There might be an adjust in the menu also for this, haven’t played around with it much lol.

As far as using it for pictures and music from a media player, I haven’t used the HDTV for that yet. Once I do I’ll edit this review. In the meantime, I think this HDTV is awesome for being my first one!

Thanks for reading *(^^)*

Great TV and Great Amazon Service“ 2010-07-14
By D. Lee (Bergen County, New Jersey)
Great TV and a very responsive Amazon customer service after a troubling start.

I was extremely disappointed when I found a big dent on the back panel after I unpacked it from the box. It looked as if something big and sharp dropped on it. I hooked it up anyway and found the picture amazing despite the TV looked like something that should never have left the factory (the QA must be sleeping that day).

I wrote Amazon about it and within 24 hours, they took the initiative and ordered me a replacement unit and to be delivered within 3 days. The delivery crew was polite and helped me to disassemble my original TV to take it away in the original box. No hassle and no problem.

Great picture quality but the sound system is a bit on the low side. It also generates a lot of heat. Nevertheless, overall, this set is better than the other non-Samsung sets that I own. Will go back to Samsung and Amazon for my next purchase despite the premium price paid.

All the research leads to Samsung!“ 2010-08-01
By Hilldy Shaw (Brooklyn, NY United States)
I haven’t bought a television in 13 years and I wanted to make sure I got one that would last me at least another decade without breaking the bank. I did my homework and waited patiently for a price dip on a Samsung, which all the reviewers say are the best. I picked this one up for just over $600 and I’m so happy with it! Personally, I’m not interested in the technology race–I just want great picture quality and a set that is reliable and easy to operate. That’s precisely what this is, with a fair amount of bells and whistles to boot.

Spectacular, On or Off“ 2010-06-24
By Nick (NH, USA)
The picture quality is amazing, and set up was a breeze, just as you would expect with a Sony, but other reviews have those aspects covered so I’ll address something else. The main reason I got this television is because of what it looks like when it’s off. It’s absolutely beautiful, a work of art. The black monolithic minimalist design with a band of brushed gunmetal grey aluminum on the bottom is a perfect match for my Harman Kardon setup, as if these Sonys were just made for the current Harman Kardon lineup. The only possible drawback to this design is the sound–the bottom-facing speakers, necessary for the monolithic appearance, are fine in themselves but don’t deliver quite the punch as the front-facing speakers on my older Sony Bravia, but this isn’t really an issue for me since I do most of my listening through external speakers anyway.

Nice-looking TV, But I don’t trust the company anymore“ 2010-06-21
By L. Stanton (Montana)
My last Sony 46-inch TV, barely 28 months old, gave out after intermittent problems for most of its life–much too intermittent to get it serviced during the warranty period. After fighting with Sony customer service for some time, they offered me this new set from Sony Exchange for a discount off the regular price. But I was still worried that I’m making the same mistake twice. My serviceman strongly recommends buying the longest service plan available, so last month I tried to buy the 5-year plan offered on Sony’s website at the time of ordering. I was told they couldn’t sell a service plan through that department, and I could buy it when the TV arrived.

Now the TV is here. The 5-year plan is no longer offered, and the 4-year plan costs $49 more than the 5-year plan did a month ago. If these new TV’s are more reliable as they had promised me, why the downgrade and price increase for service plans? I’ve bought Sony products for years and been satisfied until lately. Now I have little faith in the name over the cheaper brands I can buy elsewhere.

Sharp Aquos has amazing video quality“ 2010-07-05
By 9design (Chicago suburban)
When viewing “side-by side” the Sharp versus other sets in an electronics store, the Aquos actually stood-out from the crowd for video quality. The high-end plasmas were very close, but there was something about the Sharp that set it apart. At home, while viewing satellite HD, old movies, even black & white, seemed like they were live broadcasts. This isn’t just my impression, but those of most of my friends that viewed it as well. This set replaces a 4 year old Samsung DLP that should have lasted a lot longer than it did. Audio quality is mediocre, but what can you expect of speakers in a cabinet as narrow as this? A home theater sound system with this TV is a must. I also viewed the 240 Hz version of this set, but couldn’t detect enough difference to warrant the extra expense. Bottom line is that this set gives superb video quality for a very reasonable price.
